From material choice to quantity estimate

Material suitability and quantity are separate decisions. A calculator can estimate a specified product; it cannot establish that a product meets your project's requirements.

  1. Identify the project and its intended use.
  2. Read the applicable material guide and check any design or manufacturer requirements.
  3. Confirm the exact supplier product, grading and relevant specifications.
  4. Measure the area and intended layer depth.
  5. Use a relevant available calculator with compatible density and material-state assumptions.
  6. Check order units, delivery conditions and the final quantity with your supplier.

Common material questions

Is crushed limestone the same as crusher run?
No. Limestone describes rock source; crusher run typically describes a dense-graded crushed aggregate with fines, which may be limestone or another rock.
Why do gravel size numbers vary?
Numbers can reference an aggregate gradation, a state transportation specification or a supplier label. Confirm the governing specification and sieve distribution.
Is drainage rock just regular driveway base material?
Not necessarily. Clean or open-graded aggregate may be selected for water movement; dense-graded base aggregate often includes fines for stability. Select according to the specific system.
Why does density matter when ordering?
Project dimensions give volume. Converting that volume to tons requires the appropriate bulk density and whether the figure represents loose or compacted material.
How do I compare tons and cubic yards?
There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Tons measure weight, so converting cubic yards to tons also requires a product-specific density—there is no universal conversion.
